So, it’s nothing new that most of us are under extreme amounts of stress every day. It can consume you. I know that I'm constantly checking myself to insure that I am doing all I can for my body not allowing stress to take over. But, let’s face it; we all experience it at one point or another- Most of us on a daily basis. For me, living in Los Angeles and waiting in a parking lot called "the freeway" is always an act of patience and can most definitely stress anyone out.

We're simply not wired to constantly be in the mode where you feel like you're being chased by a saber tooth tiger all the time.  Something has to give and usually it’s your health.  With that said, stress activates your body to release specific hormones into your system. This is great if you're an athlete since this release is a rush of adrenaline.  However, the constant release of these hormones, from the constant stress in your life, creates toxins that slow down detoxification in the liver and in turn slows down all of your other systems including your metabolism.

Keeping Your Brain Fit

Your body isn't the only thing that you need to keep fit. Your brain is just as important especially as you age. The brain generates new cells throughout your lifetime, you can help keep your brain healthy by doing little things to exercise it daily. 

Learning a new language or musical instrument is a great way to challenge your brain. Reading and crossword puzzles can help stimulate brain nerves, doing daily tasks with your non-dominant hand can strengthen the opposite side of your brain. Getting proper sleep is vital; at least seven hours nightly to regenerate the brain. 

Keeping Your Brain Fit

Of course a healthy diet with all the proper nutrients is key. Choose lean, quality protein such as chicken breast, turkey breast, lean beef, fish (especially salmon and sardines), eggs and whey protein. Emphasize omega 3 fatty acids (salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines) and omega 9 fats (olive oil, olives, almonds, hazelnuts, avocados, macadamia oil and coconut oil). 

 
Don’t forget your veggies! Eat anywhere from 5-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Eliminate refined carbohydrates such as bread, cereal or pasta made with white flour, white rice, white potatoes, sugar, corn syrup, honey and candy.  Stay away from trans fatty acids such as hydrogenated vegetable oil, margarine and shortening; substitute with olive oil at a low heat. 

Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake and also potentially neurotoxic compounds like aspartame and MSG. 
Drink water (64 oz.) or herbal teas (decaffeinated)

Last but not least, don’t forget to exercise the body! Doing short bursts of exercise (20-60 seconds) during the day enhances growth hormone release, and resistance training that works major muscle groups is highly beneficial.

 Sleep- plays a large role in your health and longevity! 

Our bodies repair and rejuvenate both physically and psychologically when we are sleeping; 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. your're repairing physically and from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. repairing psychologically. 

If possible, you should get to sleep by 10 p.m. and stay in bed until 6 a.m.
Hormones are made during our sleep, such as human growth hormone; responsible for vitality, energy and all of the health benefits we associate with youth.

Lack of sleep can cause weight gain and insulin resistance.

Our hormones decline as we age. We need to get enough sleep so we keep the production moving along smoothly for our longevity. I cannot stress how important it is to get enough hours sleep each night.

1. Do you have trouble falling asleep at night?
2. Do you have difficulty waking up in the morning?
3. Do you sleep less than 8-9 hours a night?
4. Do you wake up once or more during the night?
5. Do you sleep in a room with any light or noise?
6. Do you wake up feeling tired?
7. Do you wake up only with an alarm?
8. Do you go to bed later than 11 pm?
9. Do you get up earlier than 6 am?
10. Do you use medications “over the counter “or prescription” med for sleep?

If you answered “yes” to two or more of these questions, you should seriously look at making changes to get proper sleep.


Lifestyle and Nutritional recommendations:  Exercise. Hormonal Imbalances can keep you from your weight loss goals.

A hormonal imbalance can make weight loss efforts futile. For example, you workout every day, at the end of your session the elliptical machine says you burned 250 calories. You cannot just look at the amount of calories you eat or burn because that doesn't take into account where did those calories come from? Did you burn fat, carbohydrates or protein? If you weren't burning fat, you could have easily burned those calories from the breakdown of lean muscle or from carbohydrates; either way it may have not been from stored fat. It’s about your metabolism and how it is functioning.  How can you tell what you are burning?

You are not burning fat if you have: 

  • hard time staying asleep,
  • cravings
  • low blood sugar
  • mid-morning and mid afternoon slumps
  • focus problems

So, if you are looking at this list and saying, yes, that’s me! This is a sign that your metabolism is not functioning optimally. The metabolism was intended to burn fat for energy.  Your hormones that control your metabolism are forcing your body to burn carbs and protein for energy and that will cause fatigue, and lots of it!  If you burn the right fuel you will get twice as much energy then when you burn carbs and protein.
